Hairstyles, just like any other style has for the most part gone round in a cycle from big curled hair to straight lose hair, short and long it all comes back around at different times however something happened throughout the early 2000's, a thing I heard someone refer to as the straight hair apocalypse. The Holy Grail of everyone's hair care was a pair of straighteners, GHD's preferably. There was no room for wavy, curly, or frizzy hair, pin straight seemed to be the only hair getting any attention or love.
With the most notable and predominant people in the mainstream media from the 90's to the '00s being celebs such as Jennifer Anniston, Kate Moss, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, all for the most part sported heat styled straight hair.
Leaving anyone who had natural curly, wavy or frizzy hair in a constant battle to 'tame' their unruly manes. I remember anytime I would have 'flyaway' hair that was sticking up to the sky, or baby hair around my forehead, I would be so upset wondering why my hair didn't sit flat to my hair like other girls.
'Your hair is thick, it has volume' my mother would encouragingly let me know, however this was not the time to have voluminous hair, the style of the time was flat, pin straight and for the most part, thin, hair. Now looking back I find it crazy to think that is what I was aspiring to whilst rejecting my own hair texture. This left myself and most girls I know straightening their hair daily, if not multiple times a day, creating for straight yet dry and damaged hair. I think most girls didn't even know the real texture of their own hair for most of their lives.
It was only until I got in to my 20's when I had a revolutionary idea, I would leave my hair alone.
No more heat, no more straightening, no more hair dryers. Something quite interesting happened, I realised my hair was wavy, and sported at times lose curls. For someone who had from the age of 12 to 22 straightened their hair daily, this was a revelation. I viewed countless videos on YouTube where girls said they didn't even know their hair had a wave pattern after years of continual heat styling.
Around 2015 I realised more and more people were ditching the heat styling products. Not only did I notice alot of people deciding to opt for a more curled and wavy hair, I noticed more and more the styles returning, that of big bouffant hair. This resurgence to the large quaffed hair was prodomantly for weddings and ceremonies and especially within the Traveller and Gypsy community, where big has always been better.
So it's time to ditch the heat, and let your hair breathe, embrace the natural, embrace he curls, wave and frizz, after all, in the words of Dolly Parton, 'the higher the hair the closer to God'.
